1. Starter Gary (Pallet Town (near -1720, 65, -327))
Your rival Gary picks a fight the moment you set out on your journey. Beat his early-stage team to take your first step as a trainer.

Gary opens with 'So you're the new kid in town gramps was telling me about? Let's battle, I'll show you why I'm the best.' He carries one of each Kanto starter plus an Eevee. Professor Oak is only referenced (Gary's grandfather, 'gramps'). After winning, his repeatable side quest is to defeat 5 wild Pokemon or 1 trainer.

2. Professor's Aid (Mt. Moon (aide near -2192, 65, 744))
Professor Oak's aide reports that the Clefairy of Mt. Moon are acting strangely because villains are disturbing their habitat. Investigate and drive out the Team Rocket Scientist behind it.

The aide says 'There's some villains disturbing Clefairy's natural habitat inside Mt. Moon! Can you find out what's wrong?' The culprit is a Team Rocket Scientist running an electric/steel team. Defeating him grants a randomly chosen Helix Fossil or Dome Fossil (50/50) on top of the standard rewards. Repeatable side quest: defeat 10 wild Pokemon or 2 trainers.

3. Trainer Gary (Kanto overworld (near -2752, 65, 786))
Gary reappears with a stronger, evolved team to test how much you have improved. Beat him again to continue.

4. Old Man (Kanto (Old Man near -2746, 66, 897))
An old man has had his glasses stolen by a thief and cannot see a thing. Track down and defeat the Team Rocket Grunt responsible.

The old man laments 'Some thief came and took my glasses.' The thief is a Team Rocket Grunt with a poison-heavy team. Defeating the grunt grants a Nugget on top of the standard rewards. His post-quest line jokes the glasses were on his head the whole time. Repeatable side quest: defeat 20 wild Pokemon or 5 trainers.

5. Gambler (Celadon City Game Corner (Gambler near -2394, 65, 323))
Team Rocket has shut down the Game Corner casino. Clear out the Team Rocket Admin running the operation so the gamblers can return.

6. Strong Gary (Kanto (Gary near -3313, 75, 377))
Gary keeps crossing your path and demands another battle to prove he is still the strongest. Defeat his upgraded team.

7. Mr Fuji (Lavender Town / Pokemon Tower (Mr Fuji near -3312, 112, 356))
Mr Fuji is trying to calm the restless spirit of Cubone's mother while Team Rocket disturbs the tower. Deal with the Team Rocket Executive so the Pokemon can rest in peace.

A now fully-evolved Gary claims he is completely prepared for you this time. Beat his powerful six to keep advancing.

Karen the receptionist asks you to check on her boss after some scary thugs and a talking Meowth barge in. Defeat Team Rocket James.

You battle Team Rocket James, whose team includes a Meowth (a nod to the anime trio). Repeatable side quest: defeat 50 wild Pokemon or 12 trainers.

10. Hiker (Cycling Road / Bike Path (Hiker near -2126, 65, 320))
A hiker was knocked down and had his bike stolen by a biker on the Bike Path. Track the Biker Cueball down and beat him.

11. Warden (Fuchsia City Safari Zone (Warden near -2449, 65, -601))
The toothless Safari Zone warden needs Team Rocket driven out of the reserve before they disturb the Pokemon. Defeat the Team Rocket Executive Female (Ariana).

The boss is the Team Rocket Executive Female, sprite 'ariana', with a team of Safari-flavored Pokemon (Tauros, Scyther, Kangaskhan). Repeatable side quest: defeat 60 wild Pokemon or 16 trainers.

12. Old Man Jenkins (Kanto (Jenkins near -1694, 65, 78))
Old Man Jenkins yells that thugs and their talking Meowth are trying to rob his house. Beat Team Rocket Jessie to save the day.

13. Rival Gary (Indigo Plateau / Pokemon League approach (Gary near -1483, 65, 64))
The final rival showdown. Gary battles you as a warm-up for the Pokemon League with his strongest team. Win to complete Kanto's main story.

Gary declares 'I'll whip you as a warm up for POKEMON LEAGUE!' with a Lv 65-79 championship team. This is the last step of the Kanto chain; completing it finishes the region's main story. Gary is also the region's Champion (separate 'Champion Gary' page). Repeatable side quest: defeat 100 wild Pokemon or 25 trainers.
