Story Legends¶
The nine story regions hold their own Legendary encounters, separate from the server Legendary timer. You earn the right to face each Legendary by beating the region's gyms and champion, then track them down as private one-time encounters or catch them as roaming appearances.
Legendary encounters¶
Scattered across the story regions are over sixty Legendaries waiting to be challenged (some species, like the Kanto birds, can be found in more than one region). Each one is private to you: it only appears once you have met its requirements, and no one else sees yours.
When you come within range of an eligible Legendary it appears (within roughly 48 blocks) and, once you are close (about 15 blocks), it announces that it is challenging you and gives its coordinates. Left- or right-click it to begin a one-time wild battle. Win or lose, that encounter is used up, so come prepared.
These Legendaries battle at either level 70 (champion-rematch Legendaries, plus Mewtwo and Regigigas) or level 50 (the badge-gated groups). Each encounter also rolls its own 1 in 5,000 ghost chance and 1 in 1,000 shiny chance, and a special-looking one is announced across the region.
Unlocking encounters¶
Encounters open up in two ways:
- Region cups (badge-gated), level 50: clearing a region's cup unlocks that region's mid-tier Legendaries. For example, the Kanto birds need the Indigo cup, the Regis need the Hoenn cup, and the guardian deities need the Alola cup.
- Champion rematches, level 70: beating a region champion again unlocks the box Legendaries and cover trio. Mewtwo is the ultimate gate, requiring you to win all nine champion rematches.
Box Legendaries come in pairs, and you can only claim one. Facing one member of a pair (such as Kyogre and Groudon, Dialga and Palkia, or Zacian and Zamazenta) permanently locks its partner, so choose carefully.
Roamers¶
While you explore a story region after clearing it, rarer Legendaries and Mythicals appear as roamers: they show up at random as you move around, at level 50, and are only used up when you actually catch one (losing, fleeing, or knocking it out leaves it out there to find again).

Nebby¶
In Alola, once you have finished the Alola questline, the Lillie NPC on the bridge will hand you a one-time Nebby, a level 20 Cosmog nicknamed and traced to Lillie. If your party is full it goes to your PC.
Whiting out¶
If a story Legendary or roamer appears and you have no battle-ready Pokemon, you are overwhelmed and white out: you are blinded briefly and teleported back to your region's town. Keep a healthy team on hand before you go hunting.
