Story Regions

Nine regions, each a faithful build with towns, routes, gyms, and its own story quest line: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, and Paldea. Orre is a separate campaign with its own rules. Every region's Gym Leaders have their own pages, and each region's full quest line is written out on its storyline page (linked in the table below).

How the story works

Each region has an ordered quest line that walks you from town to town and gym to gym. Type /quest at any time to see your current objective, and /story to open the region menu, which is split into Cities, Routes, Gyms, Story Quests, and Dex.

  • Story NPCs battle you only when you are on their exact step. If you are ahead of or behind an NPC's step, they will not fight. You cannot throw a Poke Ball to start a story battle either, story battles always begin through conversation, so you can never break your progress by wandering.
  • Advancing your objective grants a reward and prints your next goal. Once you are past an NPC's step, they offer a repeatable side quest instead (/sidequest).
  • Each region has a set number of main-story steps, from 13 in the earliest regions up to 20 in Alola.

No free-roam spawns

Wild Pokemon do not free-roam in story regions. Instead, walking through a route's tall grass triggers walk encounters: as you move inside a route, the game checks every couple of seconds, and after a few steps there is a chance to spring a wild battle. Repels suppress these encounters. See Route 1 for a full encounter table example.

Gyms, badges, and the league

You challenge a Gym Leader by throwing a Poke Ball at the leader. Two things gate the fight:

  • Badges. You must already hold every badge before that gym in the region's order.
  • Generation cap. Each region only lets you battle its gyms with Pokemon up to a certain generation.
Region Storyline Locations Gym party allowed up to
Kanto Storyline Locations Generation 1
Johto Storyline Locations Generation 2
Hoenn Storyline Locations Generation 3
Sinnoh Storyline Locations Generation 4
Unova Storyline Locations Generation 5
Kalos Storyline Locations Generation 6
Alola Storyline Locations Generation 7
Galar Storyline Locations Generation 8
Paldea Storyline Locations Any (no restriction)

Beating a leader always awards their badge, tracked in that region's badge case, and the first time you earn each badge you also get a money reward and a server-wide announcement. Clear all eight badges and you can take on the region's Elite Four, who require the full badge set. Defeating each Elite Four member sends you to the next, and beating the Champion awards that region's Cup (worth 25,000).

Paldea is the exception: its gyms are open-world and have no badge requirements, so you can tackle them in any order.

Rematches

Beaten leaders and champions offer tougher rematch versions, tracked separately from the first win. Clearing rematches unlocks endgame content like the roaming legendaries below.

Alola trials

Alola runs 11 island trials with captains and kahunas instead of gyms: Ilima, Hala, Lana, Kiawe, Mallow, Olivia, Sophocles, Acerola, Nanu, Mina, and Hapu, each awarding a trial badge the same way Gym Leaders do elsewhere. Several captains summon a Totem Pokemon boss just for you when you talk to them on the right step, and defeating the Totem advances your trial.

Roaming legendaries

Once you have cleared a region's champion rematch (or earned its Cup), rare roamers begin appearing in that region's walk encounters at level 50. They range from the roaming beasts and guardians of each region up to mythicals, at odds from roughly 1 in 100 down to 1 in several thousand depending on the target. Each roamer is only counted once you actually catch it, so if it flees or faints you can meet it again.

Getting around

  • The Cities menu in /story warps you to any town whose PokeStop you have unlocked. The starting town is always unlocked.
  • /tpquest teleports you toward your current objective, and there is a story pad at spawn that sends you to whatever challenge you should tackle next, from your next gym all the way up to rematches and the Battle Tower.
  • Each region plays its own town, route, and battle music from the original games. You can toggle it in /settings.
