Kanto

The first story region, and where most trainers begin. Kanto has the eight classic gyms, an Elite Four, a full quest line, and grassy routes full of walk encounters. Your Kanto gym party is limited to Generation 1 Pokemon.

Gyms and badges

Challenge a leader by throwing a Poke Ball at them. You need every earlier badge first, and your party must be Generation 1 only.

Order Leader Badge Type
1 Brock Boulder Badge Rock
2 Misty Cascade Badge Water
3 Lt. Surge Thunder Badge Electric
4 Erika Rainbow Badge Grass
5 Koga Soul Badge Poison
6 Sabrina Marsh Badge Psychic
7 Blaine Volcano Badge Fire
8 Giovanni Earth Badge Ground

Elite Four and Champion

With all eight badges you can enter the league. Beat the Elite Four in order, Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance, then face Champion Gary. Defeating Gary awards the Indigo Cup. Every leader and the Champion also has a tougher rematch once you have finished the region.

Walk encounters

Kanto has no free-roaming wild Pokemon. Each route, cave, and special area runs its own walk-encounter table that fires as you move through it. Levels climb steadily as you travel north and east, from level 3 on Route 1 up to the 50s deep in Cerulean Cave.

A few notable spots:

  • Route 1: Pidgey and Rattata, with a rare 2 percent shot at each Kanto starter.
  • Viridian Forest: Caterpie and Weedle, plus rare Pikachu and even rarer Scyther and Pinsir.
  • Mt. Moon: Zubat, Geodude, and Paras, with Clefairy hiding among them.
  • Diglett's Cave: almost all Diglett, with Dugtrio deeper in.
  • Power Plant: Voltorb, Magnemite, and Electabuzz, with Pikachu around the corners.
  • The Safari Zone: Nidoran lines, Exeggcute, Rhyhorn, Chansey, and rare finds like Kangaskhan, Scyther, and Dratini in the water.
  • Seafoam Cavern: Seel, Dewgong, and Jynx among the Slowpoke and Golbat.
  • Cerulean Cave: the toughest wild pool in the region, with level 50-plus Golbat, Machoke, Kadabra, Chansey, and Wobbuffet.

Every encounter can roll shiny or boss, and once you have cleared Kanto's champion rematch the region's roaming legendaries begin appearing.
