Use in breeding
Normally a baby inherits 3 IVs picked from its parents' twelve, and the rest are random. If EITHER parent holds a Destiny Knot, the baby inherits 5 IVs instead. Only one knot is needed; a second knot on the other parent adds nothing.
Scenario 1, breeding up a competitive spread: you caught a Dragonite with 4 perfect IVs and have a 2x31 Ditto. Put the Destiny Knot on either one and breed. Each egg copies 5 of the 12 parent IVs at random, so within a few eggs you get babies with more perfect stats than either parent. Promote the best baby to be the new parent and repeat.
Scenario 2, knot plus Power item: the knot picks WHICH stats to copy at random. To force a specific stat through, put a Power item (for example a Power Anklet for Speed) on the other parent: its stat is guaranteed, and the knot fills in 4 more inherited IVs on top.
Scenario 3, nature and IVs at once: knot on parent A, Everstone on parent B with the nature you want. The baby gets 5 inherited IVs and B's nature every time.
In battle the held item has an unrelated effect (infatuates the attacker on contact), so dedicated breeding pairs usually keep one knot permanently.
