Pixelmon Tools

Pixelmon adds full tool sets crafted from its metals, gems, and evolution stones. The official Pixelmon wiki's tool numbers are years out of date, so every value on this page was read directly from the Pixelmon 9.4.0 source the server runs.

Each material makes a pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, sword, and hammer (hammers press Poke Ball lids on a Pixelmon anvil). All of them enchant, repair, and take durability exactly like vanilla tools.

The headline facts

  • Every Pixelmon tool mines at diamond speed (8.0). The old "evolution stone tools are as fast as gold" claim is no longer true: gold is 12.0, netherite is 9.0, so no Pixelmon tool is faster than netherite anywhere, in the overworld or the Skill World.
  • Every Pixelmon tool harvests like a diamond tool. Even an Aluminum Pickaxe breaks obsidian and ancient debris and gets the drops.
  • Evolution stone tools have exactly diamond durability (1,561) and can be right-clicked for a free potion effect (see below).

Tool stats

Vanilla rows are included for comparison. Mining speed is the vanilla efficiency value; harvest tier is what the tool can successfully get drops from.

Material Durability Mining speed Harvest tier Melee bonus Enchantability Repairs with
Aluminum 250 8.0 Diamond +2 8 Aluminum Ingot
Silver 300 8.0 Diamond +2 12 Silver Ingot
Platinum 500 8.0 Diamond +2 9 Platinum Ingot

Ice Stone 1,561 8.0 Diamond +0 22 Ice Stone
Shiny Stone 1,561 8.0 Diamond +0 22 Shiny Stone
Iron (vanilla) 250 6.0 Diamond ore tier +2 14 Iron Ingot
Gold (vanilla) 32 12.0 Stone tier +0 22 Gold Ingot
Diamond (vanilla) 1,561 8.0 Diamond +3 10 Diamond
Netherite (vanilla) 2,031 9.0 Diamond +4 15 Netherite Ingot

A few reads on that chart:

  • Fire and Water Stone swords hit as hard as netherite (+4 melee bonus) with diamond durability. The Speed-family stones (Thunder, Sun, Moon, Dawn, Dusk, Ice, Shiny) deal only wooden-tier melee damage: carry them for their effects, not for fighting.
  • The +22 enchantability stones take enchants as greedily as gold does, so they roll high-level enchantments cheaply. Combined with diamond durability, a Thunder Stone tool is a great enchanting target.
  • Platinum is the best of the metal tools (500 uses); Aluminum, Silver, and the gems are roughly iron-lifespan tools that mine at diamond speed.

Evolution stone right-click effects

Right-click any evolution stone tool on a block to drink its effect: 5 minutes of the listed potion effect at the cost of 5 durability. This works on every tool of the family, not just the pickaxe. Each stone has its own page: see Evolution Stones.

Stone family Effect Level
Fire Stone Fire Resistance I
Water Stone Water Breathing I
Leaf Stone Slow Falling I
Moon Stone Night Vision I
Dusk Stone Invisibility I
Thunder Stone Speed II
Dawn Stone Haste II
Ice Stone Resistance II
Shiny Stone Health Boost II
Sun Stone Jump Boost III

A Dawn Stone pickaxe is worth highlighting: Haste II from its own right-click is a real mining speed boost (about +40 percent swing speed), and it is the only way a Pixelmon pickaxe out-digs a plain netherite one, at least until the netherite pick drinks the same effect.

Matching armor sets exist for every evolution stone and grant their effect while the full set is worn (the Thunder Stone set instead doubles your movement speed). A hat or worn plushie still counts as the helmet piece of a set.

Effectiveness in the AFK areas

The AFK Training areas do not use vanilla block-breaking. Each action fills a ten-segment progress bar, and your tool decides how fast the segments tick. Modded tools are bucketed by their mining speed, which puts every Pixelmon pickaxe and axe in the diamond bucket. Mushroom gathering uses the same ladder for hoes, with one Pixelmon twist: elemental-stone hoes gather at the diamond rate, but Pixelmon's metal and gem hoes fall to the slowest bucket.

Tool tier Seconds per node mine Seconds per tree chop Seconds per mushroom pick
Wooden 4.0 3.0 4.0
Stone 3.5 2.6 3.5
Iron 2.8 2.3 2.8
Golden 2.2 1.9 2.2
Diamond, all Pixelmon picks and axes, elemental-stone hoes 1.5 1.5 1.5
Netherite 0.5 0.5 0.5
Bare hands (mushrooms only) 5.0

Netherite is three times faster than anything else at every AFK activity, so it is the clear AFK pick. Efficiency shortens every segment by 8 percent per level (down to a floor of a fifth of the base time) on top of the table above.

Durability in the AFK areas is a flat drain: about 2 durability per completed mine or chop regardless of material (mushrooms are gentler at 1 per successful find, and bare hands never wear). That makes the material's durability pool the whole story for how long a session lasts:

Tool AFK mines/chops before breaking
Netherite ~1,000
Diamond / evolution stone tools ~770
Platinum ~245
Silver / Ruby / Sapphire / Crystal ~150
Iron / Aluminum ~125
Golden ~15

Unbreaking stretches those numbers, and the AFK Efficiency perk can reduce the drain to nothing at tier V. Mending works only if you own the AFK Minecraft XP perk: its vanilla XP arrives as orbs, which repair your damaged Mending gear mid-session. Without that perk, AFK training drops no XP orbs and Mending never fires.

For the fishing docks, both vanilla and Pixelmon rods AFK-fish. Wear there is rolled per catch, and rod tier sets the lifespan:

Rod Durability Average AFK catches before breaking
Vanilla Fishing Rod 64 ~100
Old Rod 32 ~250
Good Rod 64 ~500
Super Rod 128 ~1,000
Oas Rod 256 ~2,000
